CTA Crime

This week on Chicago Speaks, we’re thrilled to sit down with award-winning columnist John W. Fountain for a conversation on CTA crime.  Mr. Fountain currently serves as a tenured full professor of communications journalism at Roosevelt University and writes a weekly column for the Chicago Sun-Times. Originally from Chicago’s West Side, Mr. Fountain has authored numerous books—his latest, Soul Cries: In Black & White and Shades of Gray, chronicles the unheard stories of those whose cultures have shaped the glories that African Americans have given to both Chicago and the world at large. Be sure to tune in this Sunday to hear all that John W. Fountain has to say about the current state of the CTA, as well as learn more about his work.

Citizens of Chicago were horrified when video footage of a man being robbed and attacked on a CTA Red Line train surfaced earlier this week. Witnesses claim that after the encounter, no operators were present to aid the victim or pursue the suspects. This attack comes right as CTA and Chicago Police have announced their plan to implement more patrols on public transport. Chicago alderman and mayoral candidate Raymond Lopez has publicly called for the reestablishment of a separate, CTA-only Transit Police department. Other city officials believe that the Chicago Police are making progress in combating CTA crime, but many members of the public disagree. In an attempt to protect the people of Chicago, members of a volunteer activist group dubbed the Untouchables have been riding the CTA throughout the early morning hours and state that they will continue to do so for as long as it takes to keep their city safe.
