Happy Mexican Independence Day! It’s a holiday where the country and its people everywhere celebrate the beginning of the revolution to free themselves from Spanish rule. It all began with El Grito de Dolores (The Cry of Dolores). Learn more about the holiday here and the Cry here.
Yesterday also marked the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, where people of Hispanic and Latino descent celebrate their cultures, art and contributions to society. The month begins on the 15th of September because many Latin American countries celebrate their independence with national holidays on or around that date.
You can celebrate Mexican Independence today at Fiesta Ravinia featuring an entire day of performances and family fun starting at 1pm. Here's a list of activities to celebrate the whole month and a preview of what WGN-TV is doing to celebrate, too.
