Sears announced plans this week to its workers that it plans to close 80 more stores nationwide by March. This brings the total number of store closings they've announced since filing for bankruptcy earlier this year to 260... which is a third of their total number of stores in the U.S.
But that may not make a difference... there's a deadline this afternoon for a bid from the company's current chairman to buy the company as a whole. If it doesn't come through, liquidators will likely break Sears into pieces to sell off.
Sears began its rich 125-year history as a retail innovator here in Chicago as Sears, Roebuck & Company back in 1893. I may not go back that far... but my childhood revolved around the Sears Wish Book every Christmas!
