20 Years "Lately"... A Few Things You May Not Have Known

"Lately" was one of Tyrese's first big hits from his self-titled debut album... the single was released in March of 1999 and peaked at #12 on the R&B Billboard chart. He wrote it with his producer Derek Allen and it was one of the follow-ups to his first single, "Sweet Lady."

As well as "Lately" did to establish Tyrese's career and reputation as an artist, another artist took his song even further over a decade later. 13 years after its first release, Anita Baker did her version of "Lately" in 2012, which peaked at #1 on Billboard's Adult R&B and #2 on the Smooth Jazz Song charts. She also got a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional R&B Performance for "Lately" the following year.

It's amazing to look back at how a song goes from introducing a new artist to becoming a classic... Tyrese has gone on to other hits and shown his talents on screen (as well as having some ups and downs too), but with this song, he certainly has everything to be proud of 20 years later!
