Is the NFL ready for an openly LGBTQ player on the field? Ryan Russell hopes so.
Russell is a pass rusher and former Cowboy who sat out the last season with a shoulder injury. He’s a free agent now and says that after interviewing with teams so far, he felt he needed to be fully open with who he really was.
He wrote an article for ESPN revealing that he’s bisexual and in a relationship with a man. He said "Out of love, admiration and respect, I want the next team to sign me valuing me for what I do and knowing who I truly am.
I’ve got a lot of questions… even as far as things have come, are the league and fans ready for this? That level of openness seems to be there in the WNBA and women’s sports, but are LGBTQ male athletes still stuck hiding their truth because they’ll be shunned? Will Ryan Russell even be able to sign with a team after this revelation?
