Starting this week, all Illinois residents 65 and up can receive Medicaid no matter their status, economically or their status as U.S. citizens or not.
With this action that passed in the state budget earlier this year but just went into effect in December, Illinois becomes the first state in the nation to fund health coverage for non-citizen immigrant seniors.
Before now, many seniors on the edge of poverty or those who were undocumented were ineligible for coverage and had to delay or completely skip preventive care or rely on free community programs that may not always have availability.
