Today is the first day of Kwanzaa! The 7 day holiday honoring our ancestral roots… the celebration goes through Friday, January 1st.
Today’s principle is Umoja, or unity… striving for and maintaining unity in the family, community, nation and race.
Celebrate however you see fit… by lighting candles to honor each day’s principle or giving small handmade or sentimental gifts to your children honoring commitments they’ve made and kept. You can do that while you support Black-owned businesses with the new Kwanzaa Black Brands Krawl, organized by Lauran Smith, the brains behind Black Restaurant Week.
You can also celebrate virtually with Africa International House… they’re hosting programming on their YouTube page and they also have fun resources and activities you can download from their website.
May we all celebrate and move forward through our struggles today in unity… Happy Kwanzaa!
