Black People Magic: Celebrating Our Greatness Into the Future

This week’s Black People Magic is about the continuum of our greatness.

We learned yesterday of the passing of baseball legend and Hall of Famer Hank Aaron at the age of 86. His journey to break Babe Ruth’s home run record played out amid the pressures of racist threats and hatred… yet he kept on being great and making it look effortless. Magical. (read the full beautiful obituary that the New York Times compiled here and the story of his place in baseball history here.)

We lost Hank right after we saw the future of our magic at the Inauguration with Amanda Gorman. The youngest poet to appear on that stage took her place in the sun with her beautiful poem, “The Hill We Climb.” Her story is amazing and she is one to watch. She also has connections to Chicago area… her parents are alumni of Northwestern.

Here are two things I want to share to give you some inspiration. They build on the victories of our people, like Hammerin’ Hank, over seemingly insurmountable odds. Amanda told Anderson Cooper the mantra she always recites anytime she performs: “I am the daughter of Black writers, we are descended from freedom fighters, who broke their chains and changed the world. They call me.”

And the end of “The Hill We Climb” is now my mantra, since she said it far better than I ever could: “For there is always light, if only we’re brave enough to see it, if only we’re brave enough to be it.”

Remember to always celebrate your magic! xo
