It’s awards season again and even though it looks different like everything else in the pandemic, it’s still cause to celebrate our Black People Magic!
The Golden Globes are first up to open awards season… and they’re getting blasted over the lack of diversity in their nominees. Regina King, Chadwick Boseman, Viola Davis and Andra Day are up for awards this year and we’ll see what happens when they air at the end of this month.
“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods” lead in the SAG Awards nominations with “Lovecraft Country” and “One Night in Miami” also getting some love. The awards will air in April.
And of course, the NAACP Image Awards always shows love to our people. The nominations reflect many of the same stellar performances, and adds a few more we’ll love – including Chicago’s own Deon Cole for his work on “Black-ish,” which led the television category with 11 nods. The show airs at the end of the March.
On the international stage, another high honor could be in the cards for voting rights activist Stacey Abrams… she’s been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize this year for her work in Georgia toward peaceful change at the ballot box.
This is all so insanely phenomenal… I hope it helps you remember to always celebrate your magic! xo
