This year has brought a huge spike in carjackings in Chicago and while the police have beefed up their task force and the cold snap may cut that down at least this week, there are a few seemingly little things we can do that could make a big difference in keeping ourselves safe.
A friend sent me an amazing set of tips like separating our house keys from our car keys and putting them in a different pocket in our coat… not carrying a purse… and memorizing our plate number to help police track it more quickly, if God forbid the worst happens. See the full list below.
Also, a big salute to the Community First Safe Passage Initiative for doing something about protecting us. South Side businessman Steven DeJoie has organized a group of volunteers… all black men who are standing watch at area gas stations to keep us safe during this carjacking crisis. To find out where they are or to volunteer, send an email to: communityfirst2021@gmail.com.
Stay safe out there!
