It’s Friday and I’ve been reflecting on the events of this week… and all the different reactions to Simone Biles stepping back from the Olympics. I wasn’t going to say anything since so much has been said already, but it hit so close to home because I’ve been working on my self-care and failing, so I just had to.
Simone is smarter than most of us. She is at the heights of her physical and artistic abilities, making history to the point that they don’t even want to score at her level, because she’s so good nobody can compete with her.
But she’s listening to herself and what her body and mind tell her… that now is the time to take a break. That is the healthiest thing anybody could do, not just for her own safety but her team’s safety and well-being too. And Naomi Osaka as well… this is exactly how I felt when Naomi stepped back from the French Open. And they’re only in their 20s with all that wisdom… & what were you doing at 23, 24 years old?
Yet, how many of us push through for far less? I love how these babies, young women are showing the rest of us how to put ourselves first and do what’s best for us… so the lesson here for me is, if Simone’s got the strength to step back from the OLYMPICS when she’s struggling, can’t we all take better care of ourselves too? At the very least, if you’ve got that PTO, TAKE IT.
And above all, ALWAYS be good to yourselves, babies!
