We’re making history this week! Congratulations to Mike Grier… he became the National Hockey League's first ever Black general manager on Wednesday when the San Jose Sharks named him to the position.
He broke a long-standing barrier in the NHL and could have a great impact for years to come. At the press conference, Grier said, “It’s something I’m extremely proud of, since my playing days, the league itself has gotten more and more diverse. There are more Black players in the league and minorities in the league. There are more women and minorities in the front office, in scouting and coaching positions. For me, my job is to do the best for the San Jose Sharks organization, and hopefully, if I do that, it opens the door to give other minorities to get front office positions and maybe lead a team down the road as well.”
Grier played 14 seasons in the NHL for the Edmonton Oilers, Washington Capitals, Buffalo Sabres and San Jose Sharks. His brother Chris Grier is the general manager of the Miami Dolphins.
Remember to always celebrate your magic! xo
