It was a history-making day on a recent flight from Phoenix to Dallas on American Airlines… for the first time in the airline’s history, AA Flight 372 was operated by an all-Black, all female crew from the ramp, to the gate, to the cabin and right into the cockpit!
The occasion was in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Bessie Coleman becoming the first African American woman to receive a pilot’s license… the legendary Chicagoan flew in shows around the nation until she died in a crash in 1926.
Bessie's great-niece Gigi Coleman was aboard this ground-breaking flight and said, “I think she would've been really amazed and in awe. I was in awe, and this is 2022… My great-aunt received her license two years before Amelia Earhart. She wasn't in the history books. No one knew about her.”
Gigi is continuing her great-aunt's legacy by running an after-school program called the Bessie Coleman Aviation All-stars that inspires young kids of color to become pilots.
