Wishing a Black People Magic Happy Birthday and Mother’s Day to Viola “Mother” Fletcher!
Mrs. Viola is one of the last three living survivors of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre… she celebrated her 109th birthday on Wednesday.
Mrs. Viola was seven years old when a white mob stormed through Black Wall Street in the Greenwood District of Tulsa, Oklahoma, destroying homes and businesses in the area, killing around 300 Black people.
The story of the massacre had largely been untold for decades until activists raised its profile in the public’s attention… and Mrs. Viola testified before Congress in a court case for justice and reparations for survivors back in 2021, just before the 100th anniversary of that horrible moment in history.
Let's honor our elders and remember to always celebrate your magic! xo
