Black People Magic: Overcoming Odds with a First in STEM

Amie Fornah Sankoh has made history and defied all odds!

She is the first deaf Black woman in the United States to receive a doctorate in a STEM field (science, technology, engineering, and math) and may be the first in the world, according to Chemistry World.

Amie grew up during the civil war in Sierra Leone and lost her hearing at 3 years old. Her father sent her to the United States at the age of 12, hoping she could find a cure for the ailment that caused it.

She didn’t find a cure but she did learn ASL (American Sign Language) and found a community of support. She struggled in school but picked up on math quickly and fell in love with complex mathematics and chemistry.

She is now officially Dr. Sankoh receiving her Ph.D. this year in Biochemistry and Cellular and Molecular Biology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Remember to always celebrate your magic! xo
