Black People Magic: Dr. Marla Frederick's Historic First at Harvard

Dr. Marla Frederick made history this week, when she was named Dean of Harvard Divinity School, the first Black woman to do so.

Dr. Frederick taught at Harvard in the African and African American Studies department for 13 years in the early 2000s and later held the prestigious Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Religion and Culture at Emory University’s Candler School of Theology. Her work is focused on the intersection of religion, race, and politics and how it shapes the Black experience in America.

Harvard Divinity School is consistently ranked among the best religious schools in the world, taking the number one honor for four years straight from 2017-2020. Dr. Frederick said she’s honored to take the position at a place full of people “committed to the work of justice and human flourishing informed by deep study.”

Dr. Frederick officially starts her new job on January 1st, 2024.

Congratulations to her... & remember to always celebrate your magic! xo
