Black People Magic: Real-Life Black Mermaid Scientist Saves Oceans

This week’s Black People Magic celebrates Alannah Vellcott, a real-life Black “Little Mermaid” who’s on a mission to protect the ocean that raised her.

Alannah was featured recently in Essence Magazine for her ground-breaking work. She is a 33 year old marine ecologist from the Bahamas who’s been working ocean research, conservation and education for the past decade. Her current mission is restoring coral reefs at Coral Vita, the world’s first commercial, land-based coral farm.

She’s also an underwater model, featured in a campaign for designer Brandon Blackwood’s first swimwear collection. She is also part of the first Bahamian Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), showing the world that Black women can be divers, scientists, and ocean protectors.

Alannah said her passion for the ocean was inspired by her father, a biology teacher who first taught her about all the sea creatures she encountered in the canals near her backyard growing up and had no idea he was setting her up for her career today.

And she encourages us all to protect our oceans by doing small things everyday, from reducing single use plastics to voting for politicians who “prioritize sustainability solutions.”

I hope Alannah inspires you & remember to always celebrate your magic! xo
