Lots of feel-good firsts in Black People Magic this week…
Howard University just became the first HBCU with a figure skating team. The team was founded by students Maya James and Cheyenne Walker, who have been skating since childhood and wanted to get back on the ice. They met on Instagram and built the team from the ground up. Their first practice was earlier this month and their first competition will be in February at the University of Delaware.
And Missy Elliott celebrated the first anniversary of Missy Elliott Day in her hometown of Portsmouth, Virginia by paying it forward… the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer donated $50,000 to a local housing organization, which paid back rent for 26 families. She told reporters she has been thinking of how to honor the day and give back since she received the accolades last year, which also included the naming of a street in her honor.
