Black People Magic: RIH Louis Gossett Jr.

We celebrate a legend as he makes his transition... history-making actor Louis Gossett Jr. passed away early yesterday (Friday) morning at 87 years old.

His career began on stage at the age of 17 in a school production and continued for seven decades, right up to his role in the recent remake oof The Color Purple.

Mr. Gossett made history as the first Black man to win an Oscar in the Best Supporting Actor category for his role in “An Officer and a Gentleman.” He also won an Emmy for his work in the iconic television miniseries “Roots” along with many other nominations for his work.

He was also committed throughout his career to eliminating racism in the industry and society at large, founding the Eracism Foundation in 2006 to remove the "existence of the belief that one race, one culture, one people is superior to another.”
