Black People Magic: Celebrating the Legacy of One of Chicago's Greats

We celebrate one of our Chicago music greats... singer, songwriter and producer Raynard Miner, who passed away last week at the age of 78. He was also one of Herb Kent’s best friends.

He started his career as a writer and producer at Chess Records for legendary producer and A&R director Billy Davis. He helped create many of our classic dusties like Fontella Bass's “Rescue Me,” Little Milton”s “We’re Gonna Make It,” and Jackie Wilson’s platinum-selling single, “(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher.”

Mr. Miner later worked at Motown and Holland-Dozier-Holland’s Invictus and Hot Wax labels, writing hits for Martha & The Vandellas, The Four Tops, Jimmy Ruffin, Honey Cone, Freda Payne and many more.

And throughout his life, he truly triumphed over adversity… he lost his sight at an early age and lost his parents. He started playing the piano in his teens, began writing songs and formed singing group The Gems, with fellow Marshall High students that included Minnie Riperton.

His Celebration of Life is next Friday April 19th at Cosmopolitan Community Church, 5249 S. Wabash in Chicago. A pre-past will be from 10 to 11am, viewing will be from 11-11:30am and the service will be from 11:30am to 1:30pm. See the flyer below for all the details.

Let's remember our greats and be inspired to always celebrate your magic! xo
