Black People Magic: Grandmother of Juneteenth & a High Flying History Maker

Celebrating the “Grandmother of Juneteenth” Opal Lee, whose cross-country campaign and walk from Texas to D.C. gave us the Juneteenth holiday this week, celebrating when slaves in Texas found out about the Emancipation Proclamation. She celebrated by moving into a new home at the address where her family had been forced out by a racist mob that didn’t want them integrating a white neighborhood. Habitat for Humanity, History Maker Homes and Capital Bank teamed up to give the 97-year-old the keys to the Fort Worth home on June 14th.

And congratulations to Captain Theresa Claiborne who celebrated her retirement from United Airlines after her final flight on May 23rd. She was the first African American woman to fly in the U.S. Air Force in 1981 and became the first Black woman command pilot and instructor for the KC-135 refueling jet. The 65 year old groundbreaking pilot is planning to stay busy in retirement… she’s writing a book and hopes to pilot an historic WWII aircraft or Tuskegee Airmen’s legendary Red Tail fighter.

Like these amazing women, treasure home and freedom, keep flying high & remember to always celebrate your magic! xo
