Community Connect: Celebrating Disability Pride Month!

Community Connect is here to hook you up and help you out with resources you can use… and this week, it’s in celebration of Disability Pride Month!

Tuesday night, July 30th, C. Phoenix Tyler Rising Stars Production makes history with their inaugural UP Awards at Kennedy-King College Theater, 740 W. 63rd Street.

The award ceremony honors students of the UP (Unique & Phenomenal) Program, a first-of-its-kind performing and visual arts program, specifically designed for students with disabilities from ages 8 to 60. The program partners with Inferno, the Chicago Park District’s mobile Media Arts program and The Center of Equity for Creative Arts at Kennedy-King College, to teach filmmaking, acting, deejaying and voice.

This event is free and open to the public, donations are welcome to support continuation of UP’s programs. The red carpet starts at 4pm and the awards ceremony is at 5:30pm. Tickets and info available here.

Disability Pride Month honors the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act guaranteeing people with disabilities the equal rights and opportunities, which celebrated its 34th anniversary yesterday.

Remember, our community moves forward in the best way possible when we all get the help we need and give the help we can!
