I’ve was downtown on State Street over the weekend and when I walked past Macy’s, memories flooded back of when that building was the flagship store for Marshall Fields and their classic holiday celebrations through the scenes in their windows. The trumpets above the first floor are still there but nothing else we remember from years past, where families and children would line up to see all the displays.
Then I saw the news in the Chicago Tribune this week that 30 automated figures that once appeared in those memorable Christmas displays have all been sold at auction.
The sale happened back in September and bidders took home those iconic holiday memories, including a Snow White whose arms moved and a Wicked Witch of the West. I'm still trying to figure out how she fit into Christmas, but I'm sure it was epic!
