Community Connect: Looking Ahead to King Day Celebrations

Community Connect is always here to hook you up and help you out with resources you can use… this week, it's the prelude to Black History Month, which will be here in just a few weeks, with celebrations on and around King Day!

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday is January 15th and the federal holiday in his honor falls on Inauguration Day this year, Monday, January 20th. There are many events coming up in the area to celebrate so we’re starting with a preview of a few of them, including one this weekend!

Too Hot to Handel: The Jazz-Gospel Messiah returns this weekend to the Auditorium Theatre, starring legendary Hammond B3 organist and celebrity music director Fred Nelson III and the amazing voices of Rodrick Dixon & Alfreda Burke plus a 70-voice choir and musicians from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. There are two performances, tonight and tomorrow afternoon.

And next Sunday, January 19th, The Music Institute of Chicago, along with Evanston Interfaith Clergy and Leaders host their 22nd Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Celebration Concert from 3-5:30 pm, at Nichols Concert Hall, 1490 Chicago Ave in Evanston. This event is free and open to the public, and you can reserve your free tickets online.

Remember, our community moves forward in the best way possible when we all get the help we need and give the help we can!
