For Women's History Month, we pay tribute to the Queens of Soul on this Salute to the Blues and Southern Soul... we talked with Otis Redding's daughter, Karla Redding Andrews about the women who inspired, empowered, and supported the work she & her mother have done to preserve her father's legacy for all.
She shares her thoughts and memories of the music and women--like head of marketing and songwriter Deanie Parker and label founder Estelle Axton--who were behind the scenes at Stax Records, her father’s home label, helping him create his music before he died.
Karla also tells the story of how they got the new Otis Redding Center for the Arts off the ground and its meaning to them during Women's History Month. Its grand opening was just last weekend in Macon, Georgia… it’s a performance venue and music education center that’s also home to the summer education programs that were her father's dream and the family foundation has been running since his passing.
They're also accepting registration for their summer youth programs if you’re able stay in the area for its duration (they offer a 3-week program for teens & a 2-week program for grade school children).
