Black People Magic: Celebrating the Magical Care of School Nurses

Congratulations to Cassandra Walton who was honored Monday with a surprise ceremony presenting her with the DAISY International Award for extraordinary nurses. The award is typically given to nurses working at hospitals, so hers is exceptional because she’s a school nurse, serving the students of Roswell B. Mason Elementary school in North Lawndale for 27 years.

Cassandra is a native of Chicago, born in Douglass Park… she studied nursing at the University of Illinois Chicago and worked at Children’s Memorial Hospital (now known as Lurie Children’s) before joining Chicago Public Schools in 1988. She said, “I want people to really know that there are nurses in the schools that really care for the students, not just on the surface level… school nurses are a beautiful thing. People should really support their school nurses.”

CPS has had shortage of school nurses for years but her principal said, “She’s phenomenal at what she does.” The DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Foundation was established in 1999.

& Remember to always celebrate your magic! xo
