Today, we're celebrating 98 years of the life of George E. Johnson, founder of Johnson Products, creator of Ultra Sheen and Afro Sheen. His 98th birthday was Thursday and his family will celebrate with him on Monday. In his recent memoir, Afro Sheen, he reflects on his trailblazing career in black hair care, telling the story of his life and how his hair products revolutionized the market and allowed him to give back to Black Chicagoans. He also talks about his trailblazing list of firsts, including becoming the first Black-owned business to trade on Wall Street, financing of Soul Train, and co-founding Independence Bank, once the largest Black-owned bank in the country.
And congratulations to Leo Catholic High School’s all-boys choir who made it to the next round of America’s Got Talent after their audition Tuesday, singing Born For This by The Score. They were a hit with the audience and got a yes from each of the 4 judges—Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, Mel B and Sofia Vergara. Producers for the show found them after a segment featuring them from CBS News Chicago went viral last year. They’ve since performed for the Cubs, White Sox and last year’s Democratic National Convention. And when AGT asked what they would do with their potential winnings ($1 million), they promised to spend it on their college education.
& Remember to always celebrate your magic! xo
