Black People Magic: Celebrating the Life of Walter Scott of The Whispers

Celebrating the life and career of Walter C. Scott, founding member of legendary R&B group The Whispers, who passed away on Thursday (June 26th) at 81, after a 6-month battle with cancer.

Walter Scott Jr. and his identical twin brother Wallace (known as Scotty) were born in Fort Worth, Texas and grew up in Los Angeles, singing gospel in church and jazz on L.A. street corners. They teamed up with buddies Nicholas Caldwell, Marcus Hutson and Gordy Harmon to form The Whispers—a name they were given at their first label because their smooth vocals had a soft sound like a whisper.

They got their big break and built a reputation for being a show-stopping live act just a few years later when Sly Stone invited them to the Bay Area to open for his band. They went on to have many chart-toppers, including their best known number one hits, And the Beat Goes On and Rock Steady plus eight R&B Top 10 albums. The group was inducted into the National Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame in 2014.

Walter was also a Vietnam War veteran and is survived by his wife, Jan, two sons, three grandchildren and brother Wallace, who is now the only remaining founding member.

& Remember to always celebrate your magic! xo
