Today we celebrate and pay tribute to our dear friend and radio family Kevin Woodson, who passed away earlier this week at 69.
You may not have known Kevin’s name, but you knew his voices… he gave life to many amazing characters like Mrs. Leonard, Reverend C.T. Tremble and many of the roles on the Tom Joyner Morning Show’s soap opera, “It’s Your World.” His work graced stations here in Chicago with Doug Banks and Crazy Howard McGee for over 30 years, as well as on shows and stations across the country.
The St. Louis native was just as big in the rodeo world. He fell in love with rodeo, especially rodeo clowns, when he was just 2 years old and began his career after attending a bullfighting school in Belleville, Illinois. He retired from bullfighting when he moved to Texas, still competing in calf roping and teaching children and adults on his ranch. He was also the voice of the Cowboys of Color Rodeo Tour highlighting the contributions of minorities to the Western expansion and spoke extensively about that part of our heritage.
Kevin once said, “Radio fans are the most loyal fans of any group I know except for Rodeo fans.”
His sister, actress Crystal Jenious, shared these words about her brother, “Although our hearts are shattered into pieces, I thank God for sharing his heart, talent, and legendary voice with the world. As my niece Leah said, ‘Kevin never met a stranger.’”
& Remember to always celebrate your magic! xo
